Comparatively ordinary childhood growing up in the coastal town of St. Johns 
on the island of New Newfoundland.  Third son of an inspector of the Royal 
Spartan Mounted Police.  Primary education, the Robert Gordon Academy, St. 
Johns.  Entered the Royal University of Sparta by examination and graduated 
with honors in history.

Fulfilled his national service commitment (required for Spartan citizenship) 
by entering the Royal Spartan Army. Posted to the First Royal Spartan 
Infantry, serving four years, rising to the rank of Cornet (junior officer 
rank).  Specialist in light infantry weapons and tactics; expert marksman.

Applied to join Starfleet after completing his national service commitment 
and attaining Spartan citizenship (a comparative infrequent occurrence).

The majority of the land area is concentrated in the Serpentine Continent, 
an equatorial land mass deeply penetrated by inland seas.

Native life is mainly marine; the high concentration of dissolved oxygen in 
the oceanic waters and the extensive shallow seas permit a very active 
oceanic ecosystem with many large piscoid species.  Land-based forms are 
limited to primitive vegetation and analogs of simple insects.  Terrestrial 
species have largely replaced the native on the Serpentine Continent and the 
adjacent islands.  Total illumination is 92% of standard, resulting in a 
warm-temperate to subtropical climate in the equatorial Serpentine 
Continent, shading to cold-temperate and subartcic conditions on the 
northern shore.

Sparta – Cultural Description
Most Federation ethnologists would define Spartan culture as conservative in 
customs and institutions, but would find such a classification at variance 
with the vibrant and dynamic society that in fact prevails.  Insular but not 
xenophobic, Sparta has developed as a rather antiquated world, described by 
one specialist as, “making progress the old-fashioned way, by hard work” 
Terran emigrants drawn principally from North America and Europe settled 
Sparta in 2109.  It is notable for being a planetary monarchy, even more so 
for being a dual monarchy, with two kings.  Sparta’s founders sought to 
create what they considered to be a “good government”, one with defined but 
limited powers, and a society that fostered “good government”, one in which
you either work or you starve – well, not literally.  Sparta has no social 
welfare system, no government-guaranteed pensions, a system of national 
service as a requirement for citizenship, and one of the highest per capita 
Gross Planetary Products in the Federation.  The planetary economy is based 
on a mix of agriculture, mining, light and heavy industry and a sizable 
interstellar merchant fleet.  After several hundred years of settlement much 
of the planet is still unsettled, with a frontier offering the promise of 
self-sufficiency to anyone willing to work for it.
